Sue Newham 2023

I usually work in oil paint on canvas. My smallest piece is 12 inches square and my largest is one metre square.  I paint about life, faith and creation.

Once I have an idea for a painting, I do not shy away from trickier subject matter, although, like many artists, I find human and animal forms challenging. (One of my pictures had a person, four sheep and three crows!) I will work through difficulties and keep refining my work, even when it has been finished for a year or more, if something is not quite right.

I enjoy a creative challenge. During covid, I did some painting during worship over Zoom! From time to time, I experiment with other media, including mosaic, driftwood sculpture, silk painting and willow withy lanterns.

In 1999, whilst I was still a primary school teacher, I joined an A-level art course in the evening and loved every moment of it. It was as if I discovered a gift that had been lying dormant for years. Since I started painting, I have been on an amazing creative journey. I have done things I could never have imagined, including painting in front of an audience of 2000 people at Spring Harvest and painting regularly in church over a 5 year period.

I work with a group of artists to show their Bible themed work and my own to people and organisations looking for God-centred art, through the online gallery, Veritasse Ltd. However, Veritasse is just a small part of what I do.

Having moved to Mid Wales in 2010, I was inspired by the many different landscapes of Wales and landscape painting became a bigger part of my work. Coasts, rivers, hills, trees and fields have been my inspiration. The sky is a huge part of the Welsh landscape too. As a Christian, my faith pervades every aspect of my life and artwork. When I paint, God is part of the picture, even when I am painting a sheep or a tree.
